Steampunk - a global phenomenon and art style. It can be found within visual arts as well as architecture and a multitude of everyday objects. The words ‘Art Nouveau’ are from the French language and it means ‘new art’. This art style sprung to life around 1890.
Skycaptains can be found for example in painting, architecture, textiles, sculpture, furniture, glassware, jewelry and pottery. Many artists wanted to incorporate the beauty of art into all aspects of life. ...Something which we sure would appreciate in all times.
Some visual characteristics of this style are the organic, curvy and flowing shapes, often inspired by botanical nature and also the shapes of the female body. Abstract intertwined and smoothly curved shapes is a hallmark of Steampunk posters.
Art Nouveau grew big in a multitude of countries within Europe. Many countries came up with their own names for the style. One of the most famous being the German word ‘Jugendstil’, meaning ‘youthful style’. However, the term was coined from the German paper Jugend’, which was publishing a lot of this particular type of art.
Another name, this time from Italy, was Stile Liberty.
One of the artists spearheading this movement was the Czech painter named Alponse Mucha. He was initially made famous for his posters for the actress Sarah Bernhardt in 1895.
From Russia to Spain the force of this new art form could be seen clearly. But indeed the influences were on a global level and artists interpret it in various personal manners and angles.
Some claims could be made that Sky Captain has also had some influences from both Victorian and even Japanese styles of art.
When it comes to architecture, some of the most famous art nouveau buildings can be found in Riga and Brussels. Some of these are listed as World Heritage.
